In The Park

Recently the Friends have teamed up with Telford & Wrekin Council and the Shropshire Bat Conservation Group and assisted with the production and erection of over 20 bat and bird boxes for the Town Park. The Friends are regularly involved in Bat walks and guided tours through the park as well as conservation and improvements to wildlife habitats - of which the bat boxes are a great example.

This was considered necessary in part because of the disruption to wildlife which will be caused by the Southwater Square redevelopment in Telford Town Centre. Now that the Lottery bid to enhance the town park has been successful, there will also be some disruption around the Stirchley Chimney area, when that is opened up for public viewing of the iron and brickworks remains.

The picture below shows one of the roosting boxes being installed. This is not as easy as it sounds as many health and safety rules need to be observed whilst climbing ladders as well as professional advice as to the siting of boxes to ensure that they will be used by the right bird or mammal! We do not for example want Blue Tits using the bat boxes!

This programme will be ongoing and if you would like to assist the Friends in any way, then please use our ‘contact’ page and get in touch.

We will also be publishing the dates of this years Bat Walks very soon, so keep an eye out for that if you are interested in spending an evening with John Morgan from the Shropshire Bat Conservation Group, learning about bats and indeed hearing and seeing them in action.
