On Wednesday morning of the 23rd November 2011 the deeds were signed by Ms Alison Moore-Gwyn, the Chief Executive Officer of Fields in Trust and the Mayor of Telford & Wrekin, Councillor Malcolm Smith. It was witnessed by Her Majesty the Queen’s representative for Shropshire,

the Lord Lieutenant Mr Algernon Heber-Percy along with several Council officers, including the leader Councillor Kuldip Sahota and 11 members of the Friends group.

The Friends were first aware of a threat to the Arena way back in 2006 and plans were drawn up to protect it, including reinstating it within the Park boundary. After 3 unsuccessful Village Green applications and the reinstatement of the Arena within the Park boundary, the Council finally consulted with Friends and we ultimately agreed to placing the Arena in the stewardship of the Fields in Trust organisation (formerly the National Playing Fields Association). It will henceforth be known as The Queen Elizabeth the Second Arena, Telford Town Park. This is in recognition of Her Majesty’s 60th anniversary of Her accession to the throne in 1952. The site is now henceforth protected legally against any inappropriate development.
